As a part of Prairie Heritage Week, a Prairie Walk at 9:30 a.m. on September 16 at the UNI Tallgrass Prairie Center’s “Hayfield Prairie” is being hosted by the Cedar Prairie Group of the Sierra Club, Iowa Prairie Network Region 3, and Friends of the Tallgrass Prairie Center. The Hayfield Prairie is a diverse prairie planted in 2011 on the UNI West Campus in Cedar Falls. This six year-old prairie reconstruction has established and progressed well. The original seeding mixture of more than 40 species is supplemented by relict species of former production plots creating a striking prairie display. The walk will be led by Daryl Smith assisted by Bruce Stiles. Please join us for this outing to enjoy the late summer wild flowers and the changing hues of the tall grasses. During the walk, we will also discuss prairie restoration and the TPC’s Natural Selections Project. If time permits we will tour the Natural Selections’ production plots. Please meet at the west end of 31 St. Exit west off Hudson Road and park after you pass the “Road Closed” sign. Any questions, contact Daryl Smith 319-290-4160.
